Protecting Accident Victims’ Rights in Southern California
For most of us in Los Angeles, and California in general, a motor vehicle is simply a way of life and we don’t even think about the fact that we drive or ride in some form of a motor vehicle every day. Because we take driving and riding in cars, trucks, and motorcycles for granted, we often forget just how dangerous driving can be and how often serious accidents occur. Unfortunately, as the population of California grows, so does the number of car accidents. The U.S. Department of Labor reported that California ranked second nationwide in the total number of vehicle collision deaths in 2016, with 3,623 fatalities.
In addition to this, hundreds of thousands of people are injured in motor vehicle accidents in California every year. Our experienced Los Angeles personal injury lawyers know that nearly half of those injured suffer permanent disabilities including brain damage, paralysis, amputation injuries, and other serious afflictions that negatively affect their lives. In cases resulting in death, the family members of those killed suffer emotionally and, all too often, financially, making it even harder for them to mourn the loss of their loved one and to try to put the pieces of their lives back together.

What Can I Do to Reduce My Risk of an Auto Accident?
While it is impossible to eliminate the possibility of an accident completely, there are steps you can take to reduce your chances of suffering a serious injury or death if you are in an accident:
Don’t drive under the influence
Alcohol, recreational drugs, or any prescription drugs if your doctor advises you not to do so.
Buckle up!
Research finds that the proper use of a seatbelt reduces the risk of fatal injury to front-seat passenger car occupants by as much as 45 percent and the risk of moderate-to-severe injury by up to 50 percent.
Don’t allow your cell phone to distract you while driving
That call or text can wait until you reach your destination or until you have a chance to pull over to the side of the road.
Put children in the appropriate child safety seat
According to the NHTSA, proper use of child safety seats reduces the risk of fatal injury by 71 percent for infants and by 54 percent for toddlers in car accidents.
Obey the speed limit
The NHTSA reports that 30 percent of fatal motor vehicle accidents are speed-related. It simply isn’t worth the risk to save a few minutes of drive time.
Keep up with safety recalls
Keep up with safety recalls for your vehicle. While many recalls are for issues that don’t affect vehicle safety, it is important for you to keep up with the recalls in case an issue is discovered that impairs your vehicle’s safety. Go to https://www.nhtsa.gov/recalls to find any recalls for your vehicle using your VIN.
